Where to Shop in Amsterdam Centrum — and Where to Get a Haircut

Amsterdam Centrum is small enough to shop on foot and dense enough that you can cover four very different shopping streets in an afternoon. Here's the route we give clients who ask, plus the obvious place to work a haircut into it — Prime Barbershop Amsterdam sits on Nieuwendijk 85, right in the middle of all of it.

Start at Nieuwendijk

Nieuwendijk runs from just behind Amsterdam Centraal down towards Dam Square, and it's the oldest shopping street in the city. High-street brands, sneaker shops, streetwear, phone and electronics stores, plus a steady run of cafés and snack spots. It's fully pedestrianised, so you can walk the length of it without thinking about traffic.

This is also where you'll find us: Nieuwendijk 85, open daily 10:00–21:00. If you're starting your day here, get the haircut first — you'll spend the rest of the afternoon looking like you planned it.

Then Kalverstraat

Cross Dam Square and Kalverstraat picks up where Nieuwendijk leaves off: the busiest shopping street in the Netherlands, running south from the Dam to Muntplein. Bigger flagship stores, department stores, fashion chains. Kalverstraat is about a four-minute walk from our door — straight down Nieuwendijk, across the Dam, and you're on it.

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal for a slower pace

Running parallel to Nieuwendijk, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal is wider, greener and much calmer. Fewer chains, more independent shops, bookshops, and places to actually sit down. Good for when Kalverstraat gets overwhelming on a Saturday. It's a two-minute walk from Nieuwendijk 85.

The Negen Straatjes for independents

Ten minutes west, across the canal belt, the Nine Streets are the antidote to the high street — vintage, concept stores, small designers, specialty coffee. Worth the walk if you have half a day rather than an hour.

Where to get a haircut while you're in the centre

The honest answer for anyone shopping in Amsterdam Centrum: get it done on Nieuwendijk, because you're already there. Prime Barbershop is at Nieuwendijk 85, five minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, four from Dam Square, and directly between Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat.

1. Arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, walk down Damrak 2. Turn onto Nieuwendijk — shops, and a haircut at number 85 3. Continue to Dam Square — Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, the National Monument 4. Kalverstraat south to Muntplein 5. Loop back along Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal for the quieter end
